About the artist

Claude Monet

Claude Monet didn't paint what he saw. He painted how light made him feel. Born in Paris and raised along the Normandy coast, Monet became the founding voice of Impressionism — a movement that rejected rigid realism in favor of something more honest: the fleeting, shimmering truth of a single moment. He painted haystacks at dawn and cathedrals at dusk, not because the subjects changed but because the light did.

In his later years, Monet retreated to his gardens at Giverny, where he spent three decades painting the same water lilies — over and over — each time discovering something new in the reflection. He wasn't repeating himself. He was practicing stillness.
